Reflections on Serving at Our Saviour’s Shelter
Members of the Spirit of Christ Youth Group and their families served dinner for the residents at Our Saviour’s Shelter on a very snowy Friday night in January. The “regular” servers got to take a “night off”. Youth wanted to share their service experience with the rest of the congregation and here are some of their reflections on the evening:
Amber: Our Saviour’s Shelter is an AWESOME way to help people in need. Everyone there is so nice and easy to talk to.
Brandon: It felt good to donate my birthday to help others, but I was a little embarrassed when they all sang “Happy Birthday” to me.
Brock: I liked the conversation I had with a man who stayed at the shelter. He had fun teasing me and while I tried, I could never get one up on him!
Carolyn: Working at the shelter made me feel really good, to do my part to help others who don’t have the same things that I’m blessed with. It was nice to see that just coming there and serving a meal to them and simply talking to them really lifted their spirits and made them feel happy. It was cool to see that they had the same interests as I do and that I could relate to them and they could relate to me. I really enjoyed coming to the shelter meal and I hope to serve there again.
Courtney: I liked serving at the shelter!
Nikki: Serving at Our Saviour’s was a special experience. It was fun to see all of the people sing “Happy Birthday” to Brandon. It was a reminder of what “community” is. The smiles on their faces made it all worth it. Everyone should volunteer there.
The Social Action Team couldn’t say it better ourselves! We hope to see you serving in the future and sharing your own inspirations with others at Spirit of Christ.
